On behalf of Dean Regina Deil-Amen and the College of Education Dean’s Advisory Committee, the University of Arizona College of Education is proud to announce that Dr. Maria Orozco has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Urquides Laureate Award.

This distinguished honor recognizes educators whose lifelong work advances educational equity, bilingual education, and advocacy for children and families, values that have defined Dr. Orozco’s career and reflect the enduring legacy of Maria Urquides.

Dr. Orozco’s professional journey spans K-12 classrooms, school and district leadership, and higher education, with a steadfast commitment to supporting bilingual and culturally sustaining communities. She began her career as a bilingual and elementary teacher in Arizona public schools, where she championed dual language and Spanish immersion programs while cultivating strong partnerships between families and schools. Her work consistently centers on the holistic development of children, academically, linguistically, socially, and emotionally.

Today, as Assistant Professor of Practice and Co-Director of the Pathways to Teaching Program at the University of Arizona, Dr. Orozco continues to expand her impact. Congratulations to Dr. Orozco on this well-deserved recognition.
