Led by College of Education faculty members Dr. Ruth Lopez and Dr. Taucia Gonzalez, the Verano en México program gives University of Arizona students the opportunity to explore education, culture, and community engagement through an immersive international experience.

This summer, students spent five weeks in Guanajuato, México, where they immersed themselves in the region's language, history, and educational traditions. Throughout the program, students participated in a joint seminar with faculty from the Universidad de Guanajuato and partner institutions, while observing and engaging in classrooms at Luis González Obregón and Aquiles Serdán schools.

The experience also included a five-day excursion to Mexico City during the FIFA World Cup festivities and a journey along Mexico's Independence Trail, ending in the historic city of San Miguel de Allende.

The program concluded with a week of service at Resplandor International, a rural nonprofit in Cajones, Guanajuato, founded by College of Education Professor Todd Fletcher. There, University of Arizona students designed and led engaging lessons in sports, folklórico dance, zine-making, and space exploration, sharing their knowledge while building meaningful relationships with local children and families.

Open to students from all majors, Verano en México combines academic coursework, cultural immersion, and community engagement to create a transformative international learning experience. Students return with a deeper understanding of global education, strengthened cross-cultural communication skills, and memories that will last a lifetime.
