Difficult Discussions Series

Veteran Critical Theory

As part of a “Difficult Discussions” series VETS and the College of Education's Center for the Study of Higher Education invites you to join a conversation with Dr. Glenn Phillips of Howard University about Veteran Critical Theory. Expanding on Critical Theory, Dr. Phillips and Dr. Yvonna S. Phillips have applied an academic and social lens to student veterans and their experiences in higher education in an attempt to truly understand this student group. As institutions and programs like ours build programs for student veterans, are we doing the best we can to serve? The first part of our conversation will be a brief overview of Veteran Critical Theory by Dr. Phillips. Following that, there will be some guiding questions to start a more personal conversation, followed by audience questions.

We hope you'll tune into the conversation with Dr. Phillips on Wednesday, April 6th at 3pm (MST). If you'd like to ask questions, you can submit them via the RSVP form or in the Zoom chat the day of. This will be a virtual presentation and conversation. Please RSVP here.

We encourage you to read Dr. Phillips' and Dr. Yvonna S. Lincoln's academic article, Introducing Veteran Critical Theory, found here

Note: We understand that Critical Theory has been a divisive topic in the media and specifically among K-12 institutions around the nation. If you plan to participate in this event, we ask that you come with an open mind and that you hear what Dr. Phillips has to say.
