The American Sign Language (ASL) minor is designed to introduce students to ASL and teach them about Deaf culture. Students will learn ASL through the core coursework of the program and will gain a deeper understanding of Deaf studies through elective courses.
Gain intermediate ASL conversational skills.
Study the importance of whole-body communication when conveying information through ASL.
Gain experience using and practicing American Sign Language.
This minor can help prepare you for further studies and careers in:
- ASL interpretation
- Counseling
- Public-facing roles in medicine and business
The minor consists of 18 total units:
Core Courses:
- SERP 431a: American Sign Language III
- SERP 431b: American Sign Language IV
Electives:
- SERP 444a: ASL Discourse Processes: Intensive ASL (6 units)
- SERP 499**: Independent Study (1-4 units)
- SERP 499H**: Honors Independent Study (3 units)
- SERP 493**: Internship (1-12 units)
- SERP 433a*: Introduction to the Structure of ASL (3 units)
- SERP 433b*: Languages and Cultures of Deaf Communities (3 units)
- SERP 433c*: Special Topics in Deaf Studies (3 units)
- SERP 433d*: ASL Literature and Film (3 units)
* These courses are taught in a rotating sequence once every two years. At least three units must be from SERP 433a, 433B, 433C or 433D.
**A maximum of 6 units of house numbered 499, 499H and 493 may count towards this requirement.
Double Use of Minor Course Work
ASL minor coursework may double dip with the Deaf Studies BSE if the ASL minor is on a second degree.
