A Bridge Between Two Worlds
A bridge is a place where the Deaf and hearing world meet halfway and learn about each other's language and culture norms. Oftentimes, there are often communication barriers and misunderstandings due to the language and culture differences. In order to work with two contrasting populations, it is necessary to take into consideration the complex dynamics of social functioning and social oppression. Leslie Decker, who was born Deaf to hearing parents, grew up in a variety of education settings ranging from oral and mainstreamed programs to residential school and day school programs. She'll take you on a journey to discover what deaf culture is; the benefits of signed language and how we can build a bridge between the deaf and hearing people. She will also talk about some examples of language deprivation, audism, social oppression, and how we can develop an allyship between both worlds.
Definition of audism: discrimination or prejudice against individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing
We strongly encourage you to watch the recommended video: "Audism Unveiled" before Leslie's presentation.
"Audism Unveiled" will help educate and spread the knowledge that the oppressed are not alone, and share a common bond with many others who have experienced it. It is also beneficial to educate yourself, by seeing the many faces of audism, and the deep emotional scars resulting from this discrimination.
