The legacy of shaping future educators at the University of Arizona College of Education often spans generations. We’re proud to launch a new series—“Generations of Impact”—which highlights families who have passed down the calling of education from one generation to the next.

Our first story features a powerful example of that tradition: two generations pursuing their dreams of becoming teachers together. This spring, Leigh Spencer and her son, Zachary Carducci, both graduated from our Master of Arts program—a milestone that symbolizes not only academic success but also a profound family journey rooted in purpose and passion.

Leigh always wanted to be a teacher. When her son Zac applied to the College of Education, she saw her opportunity to finally follow that dream. Now, the two share more than a family bond—they share a profession, a degree, and a vision for inspiring the next generation of learners.

This intergenerational commitment to education is not unique. Consider Jessica Mejia, another recent graduate whose path reflects a similar legacy. Jessica’s parents also graduated from our college and became local educators. Inspired by their careers, Jessica became a teacher and has now earned her Ph.D. from our college. She continues to lead both in the classroom and the community.

Jessica is also active in initiatives like the Collaborative Research in Action (CRiA) Youth Symposium, a vibrant annual event at the University of Arizona that invites K–12 students to explore and tackle social issues through collaborative engagement. Learn more about the symposium here: CRiA Youth Symposium | Tucson

As we celebrate stories like these, we are reminded that education is more than a profession—it’s a legacy. Stay tuned as we share more inspiring profiles in this new “Generations of Impact” series.
