Research Talk with Dr. David G. Martinez

Join us on Thursday, Sept. 15, 12-1 p.m., for a research talk by Dr. Davíd G. Martínez, a candidate for a position in Educational Leadership & Policy in the Educational Policy Studies & Practice department. The talk is entitled: Southern Hospitality: Democracy and School Finance Policy Praxis in Racist America.

Talk summary:

Recent evidence suggests school finance and resources are continually segregated away from minoritized communities. In this lecture, Dr. Davíd G. Martínez explores the potential for school finance policy to create spaces that decrease democratic participation through school funding disparity. Through an intersectional Practice Theory (i.e., Site Ontology), and Critical Race Theory lens, he explores patterns of school finance disparity in nine southern states. He then discusses the implications of continued multidirectional policy persecution across these states, and current efforts to oppress minoritized communities through policy.
