Maura Catherine Varley Gutierrez

Maura Varley Gutiérrez, Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Socio-Cultural Studies, works with elementary pre-service teachers and serves as site coordinator within the Bilingual and ESL endorsement programs.  Her work with pre-service teachers focuses on preparing students to address language, culture and social justice in the classroom. She completed her doctorate in Language, Reaching and Culture (University of Arizona), with a focus on language, mathematics education and social justice. Prior to returning to the University of Arizona, Maura served as principal of a dual-language elementary school in Washington, D.C. where she had previously served as a teacher.
